India coal short-term outlook December 2019: infra investments to relieve economic woes
Report summary
India’s electricity generation from utilities decreased by 7% in Q4 2019 compared to 7% growth achieved in the same period in 2018. Nuclear generation was up 23% due to the higher availability of the fleet, and with a robust hydro performance supported by strong rainfall, coal and gas generation remained under pressure, declining in by 12% and 14% respectively. Slow economic growth resulted in declining cement and sponge iron production in October. But since then the industrial production including cement and sponge iron production have started to show improvement. The coal stocks situation has improved considerably as well, both at the power plants as well as the mine sites, increasing by more than 34 Mt over Q4. With Q1 remaining the peak production period for Coal India, will this trend continue? We try to address the impact of this improved stock situation and peak Q1 coal production on the coal imports.
