North Goonyella mine idle due to a fire
Report summary
Peabody has idled its North Goonyella mine due to a fire. The mine produces MV coking coal and will likely be idle through the end of 2018. We have identified about 32 Mtpa of output from mines nearby, which produce similar quality coal. Spot prices climbed about US$7/t after the fire was identified and have since levelled off. Supply has already been tight, holding prices over US$190/t since early September. The length of the outage will determine the ultimate impact on prices.
