Glencore has proposed a merger of its coal, metals and commodity trading businesses with Teck Resources. If the deal goes ahead, the coal company formed would be, on an attributable basis, the largest seaborne supplier of coal including metallurgical coal and hard coking coal. However, there are several reasons to think the deal may not occur - not least the fact that Teck's board is not supportive.
