Report summary

For more than a decade, the upward trend in coal prices has driven average operating costs for South African export coal assets. Between 2000 and 2014, average total export coal costs have more than quadrupled from R134/tonne to R564/tonne. We have identified three distinct periods for export coal costs in South Africa.
