Total energy demand has been volatile in recent years, partly attributable to the economic recession of 2008-09. Total Primary Energy Demand (TPED) declined by 3% in 2012 as demand for Belgian exports in major markets declined due to fiscal austerity and concerns over European sovereign debt. Within the forecast, energy demand will peak in the 2020s and decline thereafter due to restructuring of the industrial sector, efficiency gains, and limited economic growth.
