CCS is critical in Australia for future production of lower-carbon natural gas for domestic use and export. It can also decarbonise fossil power generation and hard-to-abate industrial sectors, such as cement, smelting and steel manufacturing. But Australia has far more geological CO2 storage potential than it needs for domestic CCS. In a presentation delivered at the Australian Energy Producers 2024 conference, Wood Mackenzie proposes that Australia's CCS opportunity lies in enabling other countries net zero ambitions. This presentation explores the following questions at length: • What is the size of the prize for Australia? • How does Australia fare against other aspiring regional hubs? • What does it take for Australia to lead as Asia Pacific’s CCS hub of choice?
