With a current focus on the need to decarbonise the energy system, and increasing interest in decarbonising the gas industry, we look into the potential of biogas and biomethane in Europe. Biomethane is a direct substitute for natural gas and production could reach 18 bcm by 2030. This provides significant downside risk to the European gas demand outlook, with the potential to displace up to 4% of the region's current gas demand by 2030.
