Decarbonising cement production is uniquely challenging in comparison to other manufacturing processes because most cement emissions do not arise as a result of burning fossil fuels. Thus, cement production is one of a handful of applications in which CCUS is the only currently deployable platform for full decarbonisation. In this piece, we use WoodMac's CCUS valuations and policy ranking methodology to discuss the financial, technology, and policy factors driving and limiting CCUS deployment in cement production.

Table of contents

  • Cement contributes greatly to global emissions but is not easily decarbonised
    • Capture
    • Storage
    • Utilisation
    • Removal credit purchases
  • Strong policy will drive deployment but is insufficient today
  • Project economics highlight CCUS uncertainties and opportunities
  • Technological advancements and strong government support could enable widespread CCUS deployment
