Norway is a mature economy with high standards of living, boasting one of the highest GDP per capita in the world at about US$41,000. Norway is not part of the European Union and has maintained the krone as its currency. However, it is a member of the European Economic Area, allowing it to participate in the European market. Given its small population of 4.9 million (2011), Norway’s economy is structured around exports.
