China extends unconventional gas subsidy to 2023 and includes tight gas

Report summary

On 20 June, China’s Ministry of Finance disclosed a revised policy stipulating the new unconventional gas subsidy scheme, effective till 2023. Tight gas, which was previously excluded from the subsidy scheme, is now included. Realising shale gas and coal bed methane are facing more challenges than expected, China is betting more on tight gas. The new scheme is designed to stimulate production growth, in particular during winter heating months when gas demand peaks in China. It should also boost competition due to the sharing of a subsidy pool. To learn more about the policy and its implications, read our inform.
