The refinery is located 5 miles north-east of Amarillo, Texas and has excellent road and rail links from smelters and to customers. The plant was built by Asarco on a greenfield site to replace Asarco refineries at Baltimore, Tacoma and Perth Amboy and was commissioned in June 1975 at a total cost of US$210M. At commissioning the nominal tankhouse capacity was 380kt/a but this was steadily increased to a capacity of 425kt/a in 1992. In late 1993 capacity was increased to 500kt/a.
