Atacama (Albemarle) - Lithium brine
Report summary
Operated by Albemarle, Atacama Salt Lake is a lithium brine operation located in Antofagasta, Chile. The operation exploits the sulphate-type Salar de Atacama and commenced production in 1984. Albemarle uses solar evaporation ponds to concentrate lithium chloride which is further processed to lithium carbonate via solvent extraction. Albemarle applies thermal evaporator technology to increase conversion efficiency and reduce its freshwater consumption.
