Opened in 2000, the Kazakhmys owned Balkhash zinc smelter in Kazakhstan used pressure leaching technology to directly leach concentrate, supplied from their own mines in Kazakhstan, to produce slab zinc. At the end of 2008, Kazakhmys announced the suspension of operations at the Balkhash smelter. Since then Kazakhmys made no move to restart production. It therefore appears unlikely that the plant will re-open.
