Cominco Binani Zinc was founded in 1964 as a joint venture between the Binani family and Cominco of Canada.  The initial capacity of the smelter was 14kt/a and it was built largely to Cominco design, with a Cominco flash roaster, neutral leaching only, and a tankhouse with manual stripping.  Commissioning was in 1967, the smelter producing the first electrolytic slab zinc in India.  The site in Kerala was chosen for its access to port facilities (the smelter has always used imported...
