On 25 January Vale confirmed the rupture of a tailings dam located at its Córrego do Feijão mine, near the municipality of Brumadinho, 65 kilometres southwest of Belo Horizonte. The incident caused extensive flooding and mudslides, resulting in Vale to promptly suspend all the operations at the location. The affected dam is the so-called Barragem I, which was being decommissioned since 2014 and had approximately 12 million cubic metres of mining tailings stored. At the time of writing, the number of fatalities and the potential causes of the breach were still being investigated.
