Report summary
Buoyant miners exposed the reality of the operating environment in Q1 production updates. Building on record margins and pay-outs in 2021, the miners benefitted from renewed rises in commodity prices. But the industry faced challenges on several fronts. While Q1 proved miners are not immune to the pressures afflicting companies in every sector, any gloom is undue. A forecast retreat in commodities in the latter half of the year would still leave prices above where they ended 2021—in a very strong position.
