The refinery is located at Berango, Vizcaya province and initially had an associated secondary smelter at Asua Bilbao, also in Vizcaya province. In 1989 the refinery capacity was increased by 6kt/a to 44kt/a cathode at a cost of US$0.75M, although because of the high cost of power in Spain this capacity has not been used and production has been limited to maximise the use of cheaper off-peak power.
