Erdenet copper mine
Report summary
The copper and molybdenum deposit at Erdenet was initially surveyed by Mongolian and Czechoslovakian geoscientists in the mid 1960`s and subsequently investigated by Soviet and Mongolian geologists. Construction of the mine and its associated infrastructure by a Soviet-Mongolian partnership, including a complete new city, began in 1973, and the concentrator was commissioned in December 1978 at an initial capacity of 4Mt/a. EMC has since increased throughput to 32Mt/a.
