Historically Freegold has been divided into two operating divisions, North and South. Freegold North comprises Free State Geduld (start-up 1956), Freddies (1955), Western Holdings (1951) and Welkom (1951). In April 1995, the Free State Geduld shafts were absorbed by the Freddies and Western Holdings management areas. Shaft names were changed accordingly.
