Glencore and Li-Cycle look to scale up giga-recycling in Europe

Report summary
On 9 May 2023 Canada-based battery recycling company Li-Cycle and Swiss mining company Glencore co-signed a letter of intent for a feasibility study for a hub battery recycling facility in Portovesme, a seaport in Sardinia, Italy, that will process 50 to 70 ktpa of black mass into lithium, nickel and cobalt products. The large hydrometallurgical Portovesme complex could be extremely lucrative for Glencore overall but its success will depend on the commercial viability of Li-Cycle's first hub in Rochester, New York.
