Report summary

In August, the graphite industry continued to move towards stability following the relenting of supply chain disruption. Chinese production increased this month, ramping up to meet backlogged orders and growing domestic battery-grade demand. China’s imports from Africa were much reduced in August, while its own flake exports continued to climb. Graphite prices began to fall in July and this decline picked up pace in August. The downwards price trajectory is expected to continue through Q3 and early Q4 before rising again in line with expected seasonal closures in China. Prices will, however, be bolstered by a tight market balance, with growing demand from EV battery growth and limited supply-side development. Monthly EV output continues to see strong growth with global plug-in EV sales for July rising 73% year-on-year.
