Rare earth prices for key magnet elements stabilised and recovered in May as Chinese consumers returned to the market after Covid-19 related lockdowns. A lack of consumer purchases for other rare earths maintained prices at April levels. Demand growth remains strong for magnet rare earth elements, though recent high prices and supply availability concerns are causing the substitution of rare earth permanent magnets in energy transition and other end-uses. The reopening of the border between China and Myanmar, along with the restart of mining in Southern China will improve feedstock availability, particularly for heavy rare earths, though the supply reaction will be limited by effective processing capacity.
