Graphite is a key energy transition material, critical to the manufacture of lithium-ion battery anodes. Robust growth for batteries in electric vehicles and energy storage systems has already begun to underpin significant changes to the landscape of the graphite industry – changes that will continue through to 2050 based on the current range of battery technologies. Graphite was previously a slow moving and mature industry, feeding mainly steel-based applications. Battery growth is now driving the production of higher performance and higher value refined products which come with their own set of pressures on raw material supply and which are increasingly in focus for environmental sustainability.
