The Ilo smelter was originally commissioned in 1961 with two silica brick reverberatory furnaces and four Peirce-Smith converters to provide a capacity of 127kt/a copper from concentrates for the Toquepala project. Capacity was expanded in 1977 to 272kt/a from concentrates by the addition of two basic brick reverberatory furnaces and three Peirce-Smith converters in order to treat concentrates from the Cuajone mine.
