Growth in China’s steel production will no longer be the main driver of manganese consumption growth. This has stoked discourse questioning whether continued growth in manganese consumption will be championed by a different player. India's booming industrialisation and low per capita steel consumption are among the key factors placing it at centre stage in this debate. This has led some to call it the emerging “new engine” that will drive manganese consumption growth. The International Manganese Institute annual conference in Bangalore last month explored this and other issues. Several themes around India’s manganese production emerged – any one of which could play a critical role in shaping global manganese supply chains.
