Keetac iron ore mine

Report summary

Keetac is a surface mine owned and operated by US Steel in Minnesota's Mesabi Iron Range, near the city Keewatin. Output from Keetac is a 65% Fe pellet product which is sold to third-party customers in the US and Canada. In the past, Keetac's pellets were primarily supplied internally to US Steel's mills. US Steel is in the process of installing a low NOx burner on its sole furnace located at Keetac. This came after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published a Federal Implementation Plan (FIP) establishing emission limits and the use of low NOx reduction technology on indurating furnaces located in Minnesota. In May 2015, US Steel announced the closure of Keetac as a result of weak market conditions. Almost two years later, in December 2016, US Steel announced Keetac was being restarted as of March 2017.
