Khumani is a surface mine in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa and is operated by Assmang, a 50/50 venture between Assore and African Rainbow Minerals. The mine has a capacity of 14 Mtpa and all of its output is sold in the seaborne market. In 2018, sales volumes from Khumani decreased due to a derailment on the rail line to Saldanha Port but production has recovered in 2019 to 14 Mt. A technical bottleneck at the jig plant restricts the amount of ore being beneficiated and caps production at 14 Mtpa. C1 costs in local currency continued to rise in 2019, primarily due to a higher waste ratio, and higher diesel, labour and logistics costs. However, a weaker Rand has meant that US dollar costs were steady. Khumani's margins have benefited from higher than expected iron ore prices in 2019.
