The Kipushi mine operated as a commercial mine up until 1993, at which time it was placed on care and maintenance. Peak production in the 1980s reached 1.5Mt/a of ore containing 143kt zinc. The reopening of the mine has been under consideration since 1996, when American Mineral Fields (AMF) – the fore-runner of Adastra Minerals - reached an agreement with Gécamines to earn up to a 50% interest in Kipushi by funding a feasibility study.
