The La Oroya copper smelter was commissioned in 1922 to treat ores and concentrates from surrounding mines. The copper smelter forms part of a metallurgical complex that also includes lead and zinc smelters, copper and lead refineries, a precious metals refinery, and antimony, bismuth, indium and arsenic trioxide plants.
