Horsehead announced in July 2011 that it would build a new 150kt/a zinc smelter using the Zincex technology of Técnicas Reunidas. The smelter would be fed by secondary oxides produced at other Horsehead operations from the recycling of steelworks dusts. In September 2011, they announced that the smelter would be built in Rutherford County, North Carolina at a capital cost of US$350M and would commission in Q3 2013.
