Narrain iron ore mine

Report summary

Narrain is a small surface mine and is approximately 1,400 kilometres south-east of New Delhi in the Indian state of Karnataka. The mine is operated by Vedanta Limited, who are majority owned by Vedanta Resources. Operations at Narrain were suspended for two-years in 2012 and 2013 because of a state-wide ban on mining and then because of delays in renewing mining leases. Narrain re-started production in 2014 but is limited to producing 2.3Mtpa (dry). However in both 2015 and 2016, it has produced more than its quota. Although Karnataka recently increased its annual quota for iron ore by 5 Mtpa, it is still to confirm company allocations. As such, we have assume that the mine will continue to produce 3 Mtpa until allocations are confirmed.
