Narrain is a small surface mine and is approximately 1,400 kilometres south-east of New Delhi in the Indian state of Karnataka. The mine is operated by Vedanta Limited, who are majority owned by Vedanta Resources. Operations at Narrain weresuspended for two-years in 2012 and 2013 because of a state-wide ban on mining and then because of delays in renewing mining leases. Narrain re-started production in 2014 but is limited to producing 2.3Mtpa (dry). However in both 2015 and 2016, it has produced more than its quota. We assume that the mine will continue to produce 3 Mtpa given high demand from local steel mills and a recent announcement that local e-auctions will bid more product, albeit at a lower price.
