Navigating the copper project minefield: the remaining four risks

Report summary
In our first edition, we examined water availability and biodiversity, two environmental risk categories that together expose material volumes of the global copper project pipeline. In this edition, we complete the framework by addressing the remaining four: permitting, technical, funding, and social/political risks. We have also upgraded our methodology. The first edition used a binary flag, we identified a project either exposed to a risk or it was not. This edition introduces a tiered severity system, ranging from low to very high, replacing the binary instrument with a calibrated scale that reflects the true spectrum of risk intensity across our database of more than 300 projects.
