The rare earths have been long associated with high-technology and energy-efficient components, though their use is also ingrained within petroleum refining and internal combustion engine vehicles. As a result, the impact of achieving an accelerated energy transition and maintaining global average temperature increases to below 1.5oC will be both negative and positive, with clear winners and losers amongst the rare earth element suite.
