Reefton (Closed) gold mine
Report summary
The mine is situated 80km from Westport and Greymouth, and 7km southeast of the Reefton Township. Road access is by sealed highway. The West Coast railway from Seddonville in the north to Ross in the south passes through Reefton and connects to the main rail line that crosses the Southern Alps. The rail line is used to transport gold concentrate to the Macraes mine (also owned by OceanaGold). The greater of 1% ad valorem or 5% of of accounting profits is payable to the government in royalties. Mining activities ceased at the end of 2016, closure and rehabilitation program are under way, after which the site will be managed by the New Zealand Department of Conservation.
