Renewables for the mining sector: Quantifying the linked drivers of renewable procurement and decarbonization
Report summary
The mining industry is under increasing pressure to decarbonize while delivering increased margins and supply growth. Could renewable energy procurement be part of the puzzle? To answer this question, we quantified the opportunity for renewable procurement by miners, explored market drivers and forecast miners' renewable procurement through 2025. Key findings include: - Procuring renewables at mines has become very attractive in the last three years. - The largest markets for miners procuring renewables through 2025 will be Chile, Australia and South Africa. - The mining sector will have installed just over 2.4 GW of renewable capacity by year-end 2020.
