The Springs smelter was commissioned in 1969 to supply South Africa's zinc requirements, which were largely for galvanising. The initial capacity was 50kt/a slab zinc, finally expanding to around 120. The plant was orignally operated by Zincor but in 2006 the plant became part of Exxaro. In 2009, Exxaro attempted to sell the smelter as part of its zinc disinvestment activities. No buyer was found and the plant closed at the end of 2011.
