Decarbonisation is sparking an unprecedented demand for key energy transition metals including lithium, cobalt, graphite and rare earths. While the energy transition is bringing new opportunities for these metals, it is also laced with multiple challenges. To move towards a sustainable future, environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors have become an increasing priority for a broader group of stakeholders, meaning the quality of raw materials is equally important as the quantity supplied. Therefore, these metals markets are facing a dilemma between ramping up production quickly to satisfy demand requirements and taking the time to revolutionise supply chains to meet stricter ESG standards from end-use consumers.
