Sumitomo has operated major copper smelters in Ehime prefecture since 1893. Pollution was a major problem until a neutralisation plant was built in 1939. In 1969 construction started on a large, modern and pollution free smelter to replace the Shisakajima smelter. The Toyo smelter was commissioned in 1971 with a capacity of 850t/d concentrate.
