Zaporozhye aluminium smelter
Report summary
The smelter was commissioned in the 1930s and rebuilt in 1949. The smelter was part of a complex including alumina refinery and downstream operations. In April 2011, UC Rusal decided to shut down the smelter because it became uneconomic. Soon after, the Ukrainian government decided to nationalise the assets and since then the company became the subject of an ownership dispute. Tax authorities also claim unpaid taxes.
