Militant advances raise the stakes in Kurdistan

Report summary

The Islamic State, IS, has continued to move eastwards and southwards over the past two months. The militants have now advanced towards the Kurdistan border and engaged in battles with the Peshmerga. The US has carried out limited air strikes to ensure the protection of Erbil, the region's capital, and entered into an agreement to supply the Peshmerga with weapons. These latest developments have increased the security risk for operators in the region.
