China sets the global cost floor and the rest of Asia Pacific is not converging on it. This 2026 update benchmarks levelised cost of electricity across 15 Asia Pacific markets and up to 34 technologies. That includes emerging technologies such as small modular reactors (SMRs), enhanced and advanced geothermal, CCS and hydrogen blends, plus battery storage at two, four, six and eight hours. China's four-hour battery storage benchmark of US$58/MWh sits more than 55% below the rest of Asia Pacific average. Read this to understand the threefold solar gap between China and Japan, why onshore wind is closing on coal across South and Southeast Asia, what keeps storage at a premium in Japan, Australia and Taiwan, how offshore wind economics differ inside and outside China, and why carbon capture never closes the gap with unabated coal and gas.
