Over the last few years renewable assets in Spain have faced a new revenue risk: technical curtailment. And the risk is only growing – Spain will add over 9 GW of solar PV by the end of 2026, with a further 7 GW coming online in 2027–2028. Uncompensated curtailment remains material in 2026, with 4% of renewable output curtailed at a market level. But this is a local problem – congested nodes are curtailing up to 30% of their available renewable energy, with no compensation for turn down.
