Report summary
Global refineries are under pressure to curb emission as well as operating expenses. Streamlining energy consumption is the low-cost improvement opportunity to remain competitive in tough margin times and low-carbon future. Raw energy consumption alone offers limited insight into a refinery’s energy performance. To enable a more meaningful comparison and benchmarking, we have developed a new metric "Energy Intensity" that normalises energy use by both crude throughput and the Energy Complexity Index (ECI), using our proprietary PetroPlan models for each site. Our analysis reveals that around 55% of global refineries exhibits energy intensity more than the global average. This new benchmark provides refiners, investors, and policymakers with a valuable tool to measure and benchmark energy performance and derive actionable improvements.
