Within the Appalachian Basin, the Marcellus Shale is currently the primary gas target and remains the most productive shale gas play in the world. Leading Marcellus operators including Range Resources and CONSOL Energy have begun to emphasise the stacked pay potential of the adjacent Upper Devonian Shale Play though, which refers collectively to the Rhinestreet, Middlesex, Geneseo, and Burkett formations.
