Report summary

Conventional exploration started in the 1940s and a total of 136 wells have been drilled in the basin, 29 of which have encountered hydrocarbons.  Development of unconventional resources in the Cantabrian Basin is at a very preliminary stage.  In the near-term a number of acreage holders are expected to drill vertical wells in order to better understand the subsurface.  The basin has proved prospective for conventional oil and gas but the shale potential is untested.
