The Karoo Basin Coalbed Methane (CBM) play, located in northeast South Africa, is underexplored and has not been developed. Pilot wells by Kinetiko Energy in the Amersfoort area have demonstrated potential, with well flow rates of up to 0.35 mmcfd. Infrastructure and accessibility in the area is well established, in contrast to the Karoo shale gas play. Proximity to Johannesburg provides potential industrial and power offtakers.
