Asset Report
São Francisco Basin shale gas unconventional play
This report is currently unavailable
Report summary
Current exploration planning in the São Francisco basin is concentrated in the state of Minas Gerais. While the basin was originally drilled by Petrobras in the 1990s, the company was primarily targeting oil at that time. The region’s gas potential was left untested until the first wildcats were drilled in 2010. While the basin may potentially hold shale, tight, and conventional gas, shale is understood to be the primary target. Despite early excitement, companies have recently relinquished acreage, postponing prospects for exploring the basin indefinitely. Given the availability of offshore gas deposits, the market for onshore shale gas is unclear.
