The Espoir Special Area is located offshore 50 kilometres southwest of Abidjan. The acreage contains the Espoir oil and gas field, which was developed by Phillips Petroleum in the 1980s. It produced about 30 million barrels of oil before it was shut-in in 1988.In 1998, a re-development was sanctioned by Addax.
