Bulgaria is a mature hydrocarbon province which is dependent on imported gas and oil for virtually all its needs.Oil production began in 1954 from the Tjulenovo heavy oil field, in the Varna Basin of northeast Bulgaria. Bulgarian oil production increased continuously until 1966, when it peaked at over 9,000 b/d of liquids. This was due to additional production from the Dolni Dabnik and Gorni Dabnik fields.
