Imperial Oil's Cold Lake in-situ operation is located 300 kilometres northeast of Edmonton and was the first commercial in-situ oil sands operation. Bitumen is recovered using the Cyclic Steam Stimulation (CSS) extraction technique. This is a technology that was developed at Imperial's pilot plants in the 1960s and 1970s.
